Black Mustard
Black Mustard or Brassica nigra is an annual plant cultivated for its black or dark brown seeds, which are commonly used as a spice.
Mustard whole can be used. Mustard powder is made by grinding up the seeds of the black mustard plants. The ground-up seeds powder of the mustard plant are used as a spice in many cuisines and cultural dishes. Hot mustard powder can be made by adding spicy ingredients, such as chili powder, to the ground-up mustard seeds. More commonly, hot mustard powder is prepared in such a way that the natural compounds it contains take on a spicy or hot flavor.
Black mustard seed is used for causing vomiting, relieving water retention (edema) by increasing urine production, and increasing appetite. Mustard seeds also contain calcium, dietary fiber, iron, manganese, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, protein, zinc, and selenium – a trace mineral that is an antioxidant that may offer protection against asthma, heart attacks and some cancers.
